Why bird strikes are practical English topics
This article is for TELCAP speaking practice. It describes operational communication, not an aircraft-specific response. A crew must always use the aircraft manual, checklist and operator procedures. Bird strikes are good assessment scenarios because they can range from a minor event to a serious emergency, and the correct response depends on evidence rather than the word “bird” alone.
A bird strike is a collision between an aircraft and a bird; the broader term wildlife strike also includes other animals. The event may damage a windshield, radome, leading edge, landing gear or engine. It may occur on the runway, during climb, approach or en route. The crew may hear an impact, see debris, receive an engine indication or be told about the event by a controller or another aircraft.
The language goal is to report observations accurately, manage uncertainty and state an operational plan. “We may have struck birds on departure; we are assessing the aircraft” is a useful initial report. It avoids claiming no damage before inspection and avoids declaring a failure that has not been confirmed.
Risk before take-off and landing
Bird activity is not constant. Migration, time of day, weather, local habitat and food sources can change the risk. Airport operators use wildlife-management programmes, inspection, dispersal methods and reporting to reduce exposure, but no airport can remove every bird from the operating area.
Pilots should use available information: ATIS, NOTAMs, tower reports, seasonal patterns and observations during taxi. If birds are seen on or near the runway, the crew can ask whether the runway has been inspected or whether wildlife can be dispersed. The request is not an overreaction. It gives the airport operator and controller an opportunity to assess a known hazard.
Risk is particularly relevant at low altitude, where there is little time to react and aircraft are in critical phases of flight. Still, a crew should not make abrupt manoeuvres to avoid birds without considering aircraft control, traffic and terrain. The safest action depends on aircraft type, speed and phase of flight.
Recognising an event and keeping control
After a suspected strike, the first task is to fly the aircraft. A loud noise can startle a crew, especially during take-off or landing. The pilot flying maintains the prescribed path while the other pilot monitors indications and follows applicable procedures.
Evidence may include vibration, abnormal engine parameters, smoke, unusual noise, pressurisation changes, a cracked windshield or visible damage. A lack of immediate warning does not prove the aircraft is undamaged. Conversely, a bird impact does not automatically mean an engine has failed. This distinction matters in a TELCAP answer.
If an engine is affected, the crew follows the relevant abnormal or emergency checklist. If the windshield is damaged, visibility and pressurisation may be the main concern. If the aircraft is otherwise normal, a return or continuation decision still requires an operational assessment and may require maintenance inspection after landing.
Reporting to ATC
The first call should be short and useful: aircraft identification, nature of event, current condition, intention and assistance required. For example: “ABC123, bird strike on departure, no abnormal indications, request to hold near the airport while we assess.” Or: “ABC123, bird ingestion suspected, severe engine vibration, request immediate return and priority.”
ATC can provide vectors, altitude, runway information, priority handling and coordination with airport rescue services. Controllers can also warn following aircraft and arrange a runway inspection if debris or wildlife may remain. The crew should report the approximate location, runway and phase of flight when known.
The word “suspected” is useful when facts are incomplete. It allows a crew to be honest while still giving ATC reason to take precautions. Once the crew has better information, it updates the report: whether an engine was shut down, whether the aircraft can maintain altitude, whether emergency services are requested and which airport is intended.
Return, diversion or continuation
The choice after a strike depends on aircraft condition, phase of flight, weather, fuel, available airports and maintenance support. A return to the departure airport may be appropriate because it is nearby and has known services. Another airport may be better if weather, runway or aircraft performance make it more suitable.
Continuing to destination can be reasonable only after an approved assessment shows the aircraft remains capable and the operator's procedures permit it. The decision is not made to avoid delay. A small bird strike can cause hidden damage, so maintenance requirements and company reporting are essential.
Cabin crew should receive a factual briefing. If the event affects an engine, windshield or planned landing, cabin crew need to know what to expect and whether a special cabin preparation is required. Passengers should receive calm information that does not speculate about the extent of damage.
Airport and wildlife-management response
Airport response has a different purpose from flight-crew response. Airport staff inspect the runway, remove remains or debris when required, assess wildlife activity and report the event. Data helps identify seasonal risk, hazardous locations and species. It can support changes to habitat, inspection schedules and dispersal procedures.
Reporting matters even when there is no damage. A collection of minor reports can reveal a developing hazard. The report should include date, time, location, flight phase, aircraft damage if known and bird remains when procedures require it. Identification of the species can help airport wildlife specialists choose effective measures.
Controllers should pass bird-activity reports promptly and clearly. A vague message such as “some birds around” is less useful than location and observed movement. Pilots should acknowledge the report and request more information if the runway or approach path is affected.
Common speaking weaknesses
A weak response says “birds are dangerous” but does not explain a plan. A stronger response identifies the event, confirms that the aircraft is being flown, describes the assessment and requests practical ATC support. Another weak answer assumes birds appear only near airports. They are common there, but wildlife risk can also exist en route, particularly during migration.
Do not say a crew would inspect the engine outside the aircraft in flight. Pilots use cockpit indications and approved procedures. Maintenance staff inspect aircraft on the ground. Also avoid saying that a crew should always reject take-off after seeing birds. The decision must follow the phase of flight and approved procedure.
Practice role-play in which the controller asks whether there are abnormal indications, whether the aircraft needs priority and whether the runway needs inspection. The candidate should answer only from information given and ask for clarification when a fact is missing.
